About Course
Summary
AI at Work is a shorter, accessible orientation session that gives every member of staff not just early adopters the essential ground rules and a first working method for using AI in their day-to-day role. It is designed as the shared starting point for a team or organisation-wide rollout, ahead of or alongside the deeper AI Foundations programme.
Who Should Attend
- All staff, particularly those who have not yet used AI tools formally at work
- Organisations rolling AI out broadly, who need every person working from the same ground rules rather than picking them up informally
- Staff whose roles only need light, occasional AI use and don’t need a full day of depth
This is intentionally a lighter session than AI Foundations. Staff who go on to use AI heavily in their role should follow it with AI Foundations or a function-specific course.
Course Description
The session covers what these tools are actually good at and where they fall short, compressed into the essentials, then moves quickly to the two habits that prevent most of the trouble organisations run into: naming what may and may not be entered into a tool before pasting, and checking anything the tool supplied that the person did not.
Participants write a first working prompt using a simple four-part structure and apply it to something from their own role, so the session produces one real, usable result rather than only a set of rules to remember.
It closes with a short, honest self-assessment where AI fits a person’s role today, and where it doesn’t yet and a clear pointer to whatever follow-on course suits them, so the half-day is a genuine starting point rather than a one-off.
Duration and Format
- Length: Half a day, approximately 3.5 to 4 hours
- Format: Instructor-led, with a light hands-on component. A laptop or device is helpful but not essential
- Scale: Designed to run well for large, mixed-role, all-staff cohorts
Pre-Requisite
There is no prerequisite. Participants should:
- Have no assumed prior AI experience the session is built as an entry point
- Bring one small, real task from their own role to try during the hands-on portion
Course Outline
01: What these tools actually do (and don’t)
02: The two habits that prevent most trouble
03: Getting a decent result from a first prompt
04: Where AI fits your role, and where it doesn’t yet
05: Who to ask, and what’s next
What You Will Be Able to Do
- State the two ground rules for using AI safely at work
- Write a decent first prompt using a simple, repeatable structure
- Recognise when an AI-supplied output needs checking before you rely on it
- Know where your organisation’s AI policy sits and who to ask when unsure
You Leave With
- A personal do-and-don’t reference card
- One completed, safe example built from your own real work
- A clear next step which follow-on course, if any, fits your role
